In September 2003, OA Sport commissioned state of the art floodlighting on its principal competition and training pitches. This project completed the development of one of the leading amateur field sports clubs in the UK , covering nearly 30 acres with six pitches for rugby or soccer use, two cricket squares, four tennis courts and a 15,000 sq ft pavilion. The floodlights were installed by Highlights, using asymmetric lighting provided by Philips Lighting. Highlights were selected as the installation contractor following a competitive tender with a number of other national operators. Highlights were selected because of their excellent record with other installations over a good many years and strong endorsement from satisfied customers. The planning for the installation was handled with considerable care and the entire project was completed on time and on budget. What was particularly impressive was the personal involvement of Mark Peckham directing an experienced team and a "can do" attitude to deal with problems as they arose. The completed installations have proved to be extremely popular with players and spectators. In terms of training activities, the superior light levels permit the full training area to be used and the illumination is good enough for competitive fixtures. The main competition pitch has been used on several occasions by visiting professional teams who have remarked that they are as good if not better than many professional grounds. One of the principal concerns that we had when planning the installation was the reaction of local residents to light spill and sky glow. Our previously installed temporary floodlights had, rightly, attracted considerable criticism from our neighbours. The installed lights have attracted no criticism or concern from any of our neighbours or residents in the local area. The design of the lights is such that there is no perceivable sky glow and this contrasts most favourably with some of the older floodlight installations in the St Albans area. We have no hesitation in recommending Highlights and Philips for installation of floodlights on equivalent sites.
